A more realistic depiction would have the symptoms emerging over time. It’s clear the zombie disease affects the nervous system (i.e., muscle control is altered and the zombies become twitchy, and we’re led to believe the entire brain is overcome when the zombie “switch” is turned on) all at once. Chemical compounds, which are small and can diffuse quickly, are able to produce a more immediate effect, but twelve seconds is probably still too short a time to do so effectively. In reality, it takes about a minute or so for blood to circulate through the body in an average person, and if the infection is viral or biological, it would take quite a bit longer for the machinery of those pathogens to start inducing an immune response. In the movie, the total onset of the zombie disease takes about twelve seconds and is sudden and total (meaning the whole body responds instantly, rather than with a slow creep). (Some spoilers below for those who haven’t seen the film.)

Anyway, here are a few things that came to mind as I watched the film. Also, because these are science thoughts, they’re not funny, which probably isn’t the preferred delivery system for this sort of topic (but is totally par for the course in my profession!).

I’ve recorded those thoughts to the best of my abilities below. That said, they picked the right guy, as a couple of thoughts about scientific accuracy and plausibility occurred to me while watching World War Z over the weekend. But just because I now use lasers at work to study how cells generate force to divide doesn’t mean I can’t accept and enjoy zombie-apocalypse cinema on its own terms. studying the physics of DNA, would be willing to watch World War Z from a scientific perspective, I figured they just wanted someone to play the part of a cold-hearted Professor Frink–esque math guy who only finds joy in deconstructing the science in films. So without even a release date to offer, we want to know what you think? Drop your theories, hopes, dreams and wishes in the comments below. When Vulture asked me if I, who earned my Ph.D. Bringing in original characters could be the push needed to earn back that attention from the fan base. Despite being a world wide box office success, fans of the novel were not keen on the movies’ harsh split from the book. If the producers are listening to fans this seems like a very real possibility. While the original World War Z film was VERY loosely based on the novel, (really only following in title) it is possible that additional characters or story arcs from the novel will be present in the sequel, but there is not much to corroborate yet. We expect to be thrown a curve ball there as well, since currently listed in the writing credits is original World War Z novel author, Max Brooks. Will the pacing remain intact? Is World War Z 2 fated for extensive (and expensive) reworkings like its predecessor? One fairly safe prediction comes from Brad Pitt resuming his role as Gerry Lane, leaving the door open for a sequel to pick up in the exact same place as the original. It never spent a moment thinking, ‘Hang on a minute, we’d better tell the audience what this is all about.’ It stayed in the moment, it stayed with that person.” – Steven Knight, WWZ 2 screenwriterĬredited on the World War Z 2 IMDB page is writer Dennis Kelly for rewrites of Knight’s script. “I think the beauty of the first film was the way that it never paused for breath. Steven Knight, the screenwriter behind the original draft of the script, has been careful about dropping any hints but if this quote is evidence for what’s in store, we may already know the pacing of the film: Lips have remained sealed regarding any plot development but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on some of the content. If they do pull out, will Plan B (Brad Pitts own production company), and Skydance Media be able to pull off a world wide release with only Universal at the helm? What can we expect with a World War Z sequel Plot? According to sources for Variety, Paramount completely canned their planned Friday the 13 th remake earlier this year, so will they be ready to dip their toes into zombie infested waters? Paramount has had an on again, off again relationship with horror remakes/sequels lately. Brad Pitt and David Fincher are rumored to be teaming up for World War Z 2.Īlthough, even if David Fincher signs on (our fingers are crossed), the next obstacle may be the distribution company itself.
